Strategic city in Phrygia (q.v.). Because of its location on the main road from the Cilician Gates to the Asiatic suburbs of Constantinople (q.v.), it was the object of many Arab attacks in the seventh and eighth centuries. It was also the paternal home of Emperor Michael II (q.v.), who founded the Amorion dynasty (820-867), and capital of the Anatolikon theme (q.v.). The Abbasid caliph Mutasim (q.v.) conquered the city in 838, carrying away the entire population, an event that made a deep impression on contemporaries; recent archeological excavations have demonstrated how destructive the attack was. The story of the 42 Martyrs of Amorion (q.v.) became famous in hagiography (q.v.) and art.
